Cult of Golgotha – A Review by Mark Stavish, Director of the Institute for Hermetic Studies

I’m honored and humbled to receive this insightful review from Mark Stavish, director of the Institute for Hermetic Studies:

Several months ago Craig Williams kindly sent me a copy of his work, Cult of Golgotha for review. Like many books I am sent, this one sat slowly moving up in rank in the pile perched precariously on the corner of a nightstand. Eventually it surfaced, and I cracked its beautifully rendered cover with a small amount of trepidation.

Not knowing what to expect I realized I had to read it more carefully than other books I am often sent, as Williams wrote in his own form of ‘phonetic cabala’ or ‘twilight language’ wherein emphasis is on similarity of sound, or homophones, but with different stressing to elicit a particular, and at times subtle, meaning. It would be easy to dismiss much of what Williams writes because he uses a variety of modern sources, some of which are dubious, of which the occasional Crowley quote is the least of the reader’s concerns.

In particular, there is my old favorite Lopsang Rampa – a Devon plumber who claimed to channel a Tibetan entity and published books under the name “Tuesday Lobsang Rampa” in the 1950s. These books remained in print for decades and were a staple of the New Age Movement well into the early 1980s.

However, Williams does carry some gravitas with David Fawley as his teacher in the domain of Indian philosophy and tantra; Leilah Wendell, Agostino Taumaturgo, and David Metcalfe all wrote commentaries included in the book. David in particular has been very helpful to me over the last year or so in understanding a host of topics popular under the broader heading of ‘occulture’. In addition, Williams quotes several of the authors and sources I used in writing Egregores: The Occult Entities That Watch Over Human Destiny.

What made reading Cult of Golgotha most amusing was that despite its unique style, being a modern American English grimoire of sorts, if the reader is able to get behind the covering it says everything my traditional Western and Eastern teachers have stated. In short: the universe is a tricky place, the invisible in particular, and your body is the vehicle for your realization. Therein is the ‘kingdom of heaven’ or at least the gateways to it, and to the ‘kingdom of hell’ as well, and other kingdoms of various sorts.

“The irradiated flesh assumes horrific masks in the spaces beyond the Saturnian Doorways.

We have established contact to liberate the human consciousness from the binding Ahrimanic illusions.”

-Etherian Physics Trance-Mission – Cult of Golgotha, p 105-106  (Anathema Publishing, Ltd., 2018)

A sort of gnostic nihilism can be placed upon it, but only if you either ignore or are unware that this book is aimed at helping to prepare people to traverse what is generally referred to as ‘The 32nd Path of the Tree of Life’ and all of the Saturnian-Lunar influences one can encounter as a result. Listen closely so as to avoid becoming ‘food for the moon’, as they say.

GolgothaI have stated many times that there are cracks in the wall of reality, entities seep through, and the masses are unaware and unprepared for what seeks to feast on their transient emotions. Books like this help to warn and guide – not in fear, but with light, for there are agencies and power that can and will help us. All we need do is pray to Mother Mary, Jesus, our Guru, or our own ‘Holy Guardian Angel’ regularly and with faith to experience that reality – and maybe, be able to share it briefly with others, or what is often called miracles.

Anyone who has read Child of the Sun – Psychic and Physical Rejuvenation in Alchemy and Qabala, Words of My Teachers, or Between the Gates – Lucid Dreaming, Astral Projection, and the Body of Light in Western Esotericism will immediately see the continuity Williams is talking about and providing keys and insight into experiencing for one’s self.

Over the last few months I have had the opportunity to spend several pleasant hours on the phone with Williams, in preparation for his scheduled presentation at the Institute for Hermetic Studies Conference in May 2020. Among the topics of interest was that of geography and role it plays on magical experiences.

Herein the word magic has become nearly worthless, and ‘tantra’ nearly equally abused. His experiences in the bayous of Louisiana can be seen living in the domain of what some kabbalists like to call the 24th Path of the Tree of Life, the path ruled by Scorpio and assigned to the tarot card Death: this is a strange and powerful elemental magic, primitive in form, and have a close connection to the realities of the elements. For myself, the rolling river of the Susquehanna, the “great naga” that rules her, and twists and turns to the Chesapeake Bay influenced me.

The power of geography and the power of blood are essential to the path of personal transformation, and few modern teachers are either able or willing to address this potent reality. Fortunately there are a few, and Williams is among them.

With this, he has shared his path and method as best he can, and acts as a true friend and guide for those wanting to work their way through the desert of the soul. Maybe nothing says it more succinctly than the author’s closing words:

“The body is the doorway to infinite worlds…”
